We find ourselves once again in the time of year when the old thermal bypass is robbing your house of energy, the movement of heat through a material or wall section. Thermal bypasses account for more than half the energy loss in houses that we audit. This is at its worst when the temperature difference between inside and outside is the greatest. You cannot see this type of energy loss without the aid of thermal imaging cameras. These cameras can show you where heat is entering into or out of your home. Most of the thermal bypass problems can be located with this type of equipment, but some require the trained eye to pick out. As I said earlier you cannot see energy loss with the naked eye but you can still identify problem areas if you know what you are looking for. This is why it is necessary to crawl into every nook and cranny of your house to find just such problems. Once these areas are discovered then it is possible through sophisticated software to determine the amount of energy loss and savings you can expect after correcting the problem. One of the more common problems that we find in houses and fortunately they are usually fairly easy to fix. Of course the saying goes “Everything is easy if you know how to do it!”. This is where we can most help GCI knows how to fix it and that is why you need to hire us to audit your house or better yet advise you at the start of your construction project.
